Congratulations to Katherine Kio from 3K for being successful in becoming an Australian finalist in the Colgate ‘My Bright Smile’ Global Poster Competition. Artwork from twelve students has been selected to represent Australia and New Zealand, and with over 700 entries Katherine’s efforts are clearly outstanding. Katherine has received a range of goods and products for her success so far, and Katherine’s work has now been sent to New York to compete with many other finalists from other countries around the world. Twelve Global winners will be chosen and their artwork will be reproduced in next year’s ‘My Bright Smile’ Calendar to be distributed to over 50 countries participating in the ‘Bright Smiles, Bright Futures’ program. We wish Katherine well, and would like to tell her how proud we are of her!

You may or may not be aware of all of the happenings that form part of a normal week at Viewbank PS – especially at lunchtimes! Last Friday I wandered off to the Hall to sit in on a chess lesson (I learned lots, too!). About 25 students have weekly chess lessons, and they get to compete fairly regularly against other schools. This week the chess team journeys to Rosanna PS and we are hosting another tournament ourselves on September 11, catering for about 140 chess enthusiasts. I soon trotted off to the vegie garden to chat to Glenda Timmins and Kim Watson who each week work with any number of green-thumbed students, educating them in all aspects of horticulture. Numbers were small on Friday, but enthusiasm was clearly high. On my way back to the main building I was then privileged to see our 20 State Schools Spectacular dancers practicing their moves for their big performances early in September. With a games club on Thursdays, a Dance group on Wednesdays, a Science Club on Mondays, netball tournaments and practice and the library open twice a week for general browsing and reading lunchtimes can be just as busy inside as out, and there are always options available for different personalities and enthusiasts!
