camp

Year 3 – 6 students at Viewbank are offered the chance to attend a wide range of educational camps. The Grade 3 camp is a 3-day adventure at an Urban Camp situated in Brens Drive, Parkville within Royal Park. This provides the perfect central point to explore all that Melbourne has to offer with students visiting many tourist highlights. The Grade 4 students also attend a 3-day camp at a seaside setting – the Anglesea Recreation Camp, with the focus on adventure activities including canoeing, cycling, initiative activities and nerve testers such as the giant swing and vertical challenge. The grade 5 students also attend a YMCA Camp at the Lady Northcote Camp in Bacchus Marsh, incorporating a whole day’s visit to Sovereign Hill, as well as adventure activities. The stay is extended to four days. The camping program culminates in a 5-day tour of Canberra for our Grade 6 students as they explore our nation’s capital.

Chess

Chess was introduced as an optional part of our school’s extra curricular program in 2007. Lessons are provided each Friday during Chess Club, with chess ‘guru’ Jim Cannon, teaching students strategies and tactics to improve their playing. Students are provided opportunities to compete in district competitions, with Viewbank PS hosting two such tournaments each year. Over the years, our school has placed in the top three schools in Victoria, a performance we are suitably proud of.

JUNIOR & SENIOR BAND

Viewbank students who learn an instrument are encouraged to join our Junior or Senior band. Our bands regularly perform and showcase their skills at a variety of school events such as, The Bi-Annual Art Show.

Code club

Each week Year 3 – 6 students are able to participate in a ‘Code Club’ during lunchtime on Thursdays and Fridays. We are very fortunate to have a volunteer, Philip Peitsch. Philip was linked to our school through an organisation that connects developers and educators to encourage the development of coding skills in students. Students will develop and further their coding knowledge through different activities and projects using a range of resources.
